Deaf Mob Do Rite.
In Australia, Deaf and hard-of-hearing Aboriginal people face significant communication barriers, especially in legal and healthcare settings. Over 90% of these individuals in the justice system suffer from hearing problems ranging from mild to severe. Many use traditional Aboriginal and Kriol sign languages, which are often not recognized or understood by mainstream services.
Leaning on initial work by Centre for Inclusive Design our team have gone on to develop a prototype AI product to Deaf and hard-of-hearing Aboriginal people through the justice and health systems. Their way. The prototype is on the site Deaf Mob DO Rite.

Breaking the silence.
This project will codesign a framework and methodology for an AI translation and preservation tool that is usable and useful by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. By creating a platform and materials to be owned and used by Deaf and hard-of-hearing Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people they can capture and teach their own Deaf languages in their own communities.
The initial phase of this project will be to work with community to determine what is useful, and usable – especially for young people. Research into language and technology and the creation of accessible communication that will be co-designed with people in remote areas.
